![]() About Macroom - The "Capital of Muskerry"
Macroom, a beautiful "market town" situated mid way between Cork and Tralee in Co. Kerry is the gateway to tourism in South Kerry and the beautiful scenery of West Cork. Macroom, The "Capital of Muskerry" boasts the beautiful River Sullane, running virtually through the centre of town, and added to the River Lee and the River Lawney which also flow nearby, it is no wonder fishing is a big part of life in this area The town of Macroom boasts some beautiful walks and one of its greatest amenities is the Castle Grounds. These grounds comprise of the local G.A.A grounds, a top class golf course and they are also home to Bishop McEgan College. On the approach into town from the Cork side a large sculpture of a bronze bull denotes the long standing friendship and reliance that the farming community and the local townspeople enjoy from each other.
The town has much needed bedroom space with the Castle Hotel and Leisure Centre on the Main St, Penn’s Bar and Guesthouse in the North Square and The Riverside Park Hotel on the Killarney Road. Adding to these hotels are the numerous bed and breakfasts in the town. Twomey’s B&B situated on Main St./ Railway View, and Murphy’s B&B on Cork St. are very popular, with the frequent visitor returning to them time and time again. These two premises are within a two-five minute walk from all local amenities. Care for the sick and the elderly is a big feature and concern to the local community and the town is very lucky to have such facilities as Macroom Community Hospital, Cunamh and St. Colmans House, centres to treat mental disabilities and the local medical centre, all of which are situated in the hospital grounds at the end of Glen Park housing estate. In the centre of town there is the Sullane Haven complex which gives fantastic care to the elderly culminating with its full time residency, and its numerous activities such as bingo etc. in the Fr. Ryan Hall. The centre is also the base for preparing the meals which are distributed to the elderly and infirm around town on a daily basis by the dedicated "Meals on Wheels" staff.
Also situated in the confines of the Hospital grounds is the Health Safety Executive (HSE) run Macroom Health Centre. This new purposely built Health Centre was opened some years ago and it has rooms for the Community Welfare officer, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Home Help Organiser, Public Health Nurses, Chiropodist, School Doctors and a Physiotherapist. It is also home to the South Doc Service, a very essential service for the community and this service runs from 5.00pm to 12 midnight daily. These times may be subject to change. Care for the elderly is a major priority for the town of Macroom and we are very lucky to have 2 first class Nursing Homes within walking distance of the town centre. Cahereen Nursing Home is based in Codrum, Macroom and Care Choice is based in the Gurteenroe area of town. Both these facilities are rated very highly by the regulatory authorities.
Also based in town is the Macroom Family Resource Centre, a very important facility in catering for the family unit as a whole and the well being of a local community. This centre is located at Fairfield, Kilnagurteen, Macroom and can be contacted at 026 20561. If you have photographs you would like to see on this page please submit them here |
